One of just 100 built, this matching numbers, ultra low mileage Giulietta Sprint Veloce Lightweight is an absolute top quality automobile- both in terms of rarity and driving pleasure. Standard Giulietta Veloces are well regarded cars among Italian automotive enthusiasts, but Lightweights are the holy grail- equipped with alloy door/lids, alloy door window frames, alloy `wing` above the license plate, Plexiglas side and rear windows, ribbed trunk floor, magnesium oil pan & air intake `box`, rear seat delete, and twin Weber 40DCO3 carburetors.

As per Archivio Storico Alfa Romeo, this fantastic example was manufactured on March 11, 1957; shipped to Bonniers (Joachim Bonnier`s family dealership), Bilakbiebolac Stockholm on March 14, 1957. This car is thought to have been one of six 750 Veloces sold new to Sweden. It was special ordered with chrome bumpers, covered glove box, extra carpet around base of seats, cigarette lighter, fabric on dash top and instrument cluster, heater, and a fuel tank protection plate. The car remains a fundamentally unchanged, ultra original car in its original colors, and with completely original interior. It is a remarkable time capsule in terms of preservation. The car has been repainted, and looks stunning. The body is straight with outstanding panel match and, with the exception of one small area behind the left front wheel, no evidence of damage or repairs. The chrome appears to have been selectively refinished at the time of the repaint and has a fantastic luster. All the original Plexiglas, glass, and lenses (including the virtually impossible to locate Carello headlights and Marchal driving lamps) are in outstanding condition.

The interior is marvelously original and in the very best condition that could be expected considering the car is now 51 years old. The carpet, headliner, gauges, switches, knobs, seats, and door panels are all absolutely as delivered. The rubber trunk mat has been refreshed, and a modern dry cell battery installed with a proper hold down to increase the reliability and user friendly nature of this car for events.

The engine bay was repainted with the balance of the car, and shows all the signs of methodical detailing to original specifications where work has been performed. Many of the ancillaries which have not been restored such as the brake reservoir and vent hose display a light patina in keeping with the cars original condition. The underside is detailed in similar fashion where work has been performed, but otherwise untouched and original.

The current owner has performed much recommissioning work to ensure that car is in top form- ready for events or for preservation concourse showing. The car has been meticulously detailed inside and out. Five new period typical new tires are fitted, the radiator was serviced, carburetors rebuilt, fuel tank serviced, starter and generator overhauled, brake system serviced including master and wheel cylinders, and repairs to steering ball joint and idler arm. The differential was cleaned and resealed, and seat belts were installed for rallying. At the suggestion of The Collier Museum the engine was rebuilt to 1400cc specifications, and a more aggressive Pittatore cam installed. The overhaul was done using Arias pistons, a race detailed crankshaft, and new valves and springs. Alfa expert Dan Marvin treated the cylinder head to suit the new cam profile. Special heat-coat paint was applied to the exhaust headers. The engine was dyno tested before being reinstalled.

With this car comes the spare wheel with new tire, restored and correct jack, fantastic documentation, and a few small original bits and pieces which have been set aside as work was performed.

Today the car shows just 32,294 kms, or just 20,000 miles. The car performs very well- as you would expect from a low mileage example. The rebuilt, matching numbers engine revs freely and pulls strong. The correct, early Giulietta transmission shifts smoothly and precisely.

Eligible for virtually every important historic racing and rally venue around the globe including the Mille Miglia, this delightful factory Veloce Lightweight represents an unpretentious yet rare, reliable, and satisfying toy or addition to any important car collection.

UPDATE: January 14, 2017 For Sale on Southwood Car Company website:
In 1956 Alfa Romeo decided to construct a higher performance version of the hugely successful Giulietta Sprint to compete in events such as the legendary Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. The Alleggerita was born, sharing the beautifully balanced, aerodynamic Bertone body by Franco Scaglione, with the Sprint and standard Sprint Veloce.

The literal translation of the Italian word Alleggerita is lightened and that is exactly what Alfa Romeo did to create this special model. Aluminium doors, hood and boot along with plexiglass window to the sides and rear screens. The interior of the doors were stripped out to the bare minimum with sliding openers to the driver and passenger doors to save the weight of window winders. The front seats were lightened to the minimum, the rear seat removed and no heavy soundproofing. No stone was left unturned in Alfa Romeo's quest to produce a lightweight competitive sporting coupe.

Powered by Alfa Romeo's brilliant new 1.3-litre twin-cam, four-cylinder engine, the Veloce bore an aluminium block with a hemispherical cylinder head and fitted with a pair of Weber 40DCO3 carburettors, produced a marked increase in power over the 62 horsepower specified for the more workaday four-door Berlinas. Mechanical modifications included, high-lift camshafts, magnesium oil pan and intake manifold, special tachometer to denote higher 6,600 rpm redline and larger 21-gallon fuel tank for long-distance racing. Designed to maximise the power to weight ratio each of the largely hand-built Alleggerita models was slightly different from the next. The Alleggerita is notably more responsive and sharper to drive than the standard Giulietta Sprint Veloce, and it immediately proved itself to be a serious contender on closed courses.

The high revving twin-cam motor was a natural fit for competition. Alfa Romeo was keen for experienced and enthusiastic drivers to compete in the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. In 1956, Swedish racing driver Joakim (Jo) Bonnier entered the Mille Miglia in an Alleggerita Sprint Veloce and finished fifteenth overall, ahead of many more powerful competitors. Coming from a wealthy family (they were the official Alfa Romeo importer in Sweden) and defying his family's wish for him to become a doctor, Jo Bonnier entered the world of Formula One in 1956 at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. It is unclear whether his drive in the 1956 Mille Miglia, or his Formula One start at Monza of the same year, inspired him to own the special Alleggerita offered here, but the timing is notable.

Bonnier raced in both Formula One and various sports car competitions and was a quintessential gentleman racer of the 1960s. He campaigned this Azzuro Nube Alfa Romeo in several races in 1956, including at the Berlin Grand Prix at AVUS, where he won his class. This Sprint Veloce is also understood to have subsequently driven by Swedish champion Olle Rehnvall in competition during the early 1960s.

This Alleggerita remained in Sweden until it was restored to the highest standards in 2012 under the care of the previous owner. It is presented today as it did when on completion in July 1956. Painted in it's correct Azzuro Nube light blue over white and with blue vinyl trim, is undoubtedly one of the nicest examples of this rare lightweight racing breed. Given it's racing history, it is not surprising that it's original engine was replaced at some point. The 1,290-cubic centimetre twin-cam engine that was fitted in period is a correct Sprint Veloce power plant from late 1957. As you would expect it is in fantastic mechanical order, with a clean and detailed engine bay. Since it's restoration, the Sprint Alleggerita has only been sparingly driven, and it remains in superb condition. Included with the sale of the Alfa Romeo are it's original delivery and registration documents from Sweden.
