Vehicle Description
Rare original 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider Veloce. One of Pininfarina’s nicest looking designs. Last year of this body style, then Alfa Romeo went to the Duetto Spiders. I have a confirmation letter from Alfa Romeo which states that "AR 390544 was manufactured on April 8th 1965 and sold on April 20th 1965 to Alfa Romeo from Newark, USA. Body colour was originally red with black interior." Correct Veloce airflow sheet metal and hoses can be seen in photos.

Has the front disc brakes that the earlier Giulietta’s didn’t have, so it stops great and feels very safe to drive with all the modern cars out there. The engine currently installed is a rebuilt 1750cc from and early ‘70’s Berlina (AR00551*07063), but a correct 1965 1600 Giulia Spider Veloce engine (AR00121*02127) will also go to the winning bidder. The Veloce engine is complete except for one of the DCOE2 Webers and the veloce pan and pump, but a Veloce pan and pump is installed on the 1750cc and can be swapped to the Veloce engine. So with this Spider you’ve got the best of both, the nice tractable 1750cc engine and a correct 1600cc Veloce engine.

BODY

The paint is in excellent condition with only a few very minor chip touch ups. It is a deeper red than the original Alfa orange red, but very nice and shiny. Trunk lid, engine lid and doors all fit fine. Chrome is in very good condition, with only some scratches on the rear bumper (see photo). Trunk lock works fine, as does the door lock and glove compartment. The floors have some patched areas in the footwells (see detailed photo link), that are functional and fine for a driver, but to make this Spider into a showcar, the front floors should be replaced. I consulted with a professional restoration shop in my area and the repair cost would be approximately $3000. Rocker repair has been performed at some point in the past. Rear trunk is original and solid with no rust and battery area is clean as well. Overall the body appears is very straight and was likely never subject to major accident repair. There are some scratches on the windshield from the wiper that would likely come out or improve with some professional buffing. Hubcaps and wheels are in good condition.

INTERIOR

Interior is in very good condition and is black vinyl. The rear area where the spare fits, appears to be all original. The soft top is in very good condition. I’m told that since it’s vinyl, it is not the original one, since Veloce’s came with canvas, but is an original vinyl top and is likely the second top installed on this Spider. There are some marks on the rear window from the spare tire that should come off with some cleaning. Also there is some minor yellowing. Carpet is in good condition.

ELECTRICALS

Headlights and tail lights function fine, brake lights light up, map light under glove box works, heater works, dash/gauge lights work, wipers work and the original radio works fine. The cigar lighter and the backup lights are not functioning. The turn signals work intermittently. Just needs some cleanup to the electrical connections. Oil temp gauge is not working (likely just the sensor). Battery is brand new. Newly rebuilt generator.

SUSPENSION

New Koni shocks have been installed. The rest of the suspension appears to be original and is solid. The Spider tracks very straight and rides great. Brakes work fine, but emergency brake requires some adjusting or may need shoes replaced. Michelin XZX 165SR15 tires are in excellent condition (less than 4 years old) with under 1000 miles on them.

ENGINE and TRANSMISSION

The 1750cc engine runs strong with 150psi measured at each cylinder. Always starts up fine and runs great. Gauge shows strong oil pressure (between the 55psi and 110psi marks). Original 5 speed gearbox shifts smoothly. DCOE24 Webers are currently installed. Brand new central and rear exhaust pipes and mufflers. Correct Veloce electric fuel pump and regulator.

The 1600cc Veloce engine will need a rebuild or some good cleaning. I have never run the engine, but it is very clean inside and has been stored for a number of years. Comes with the correct cams, distributor and one DCOE2 Weber.

EXTRA PARTS

Comes with the original canvas full tonneau cover, copy of owner’s manual, shop manual and parts manuals on CDROM and nice Alfa Romeo protective fender cover. I have receipts back to '99. Original jack, lug wrench and spare are all there. For extra cost, I have an original Veloce 140MPH speedometer available in excellent condition to replace the original in the dash, who’s face is a bit yellowed.
